SUNDAY NIGHT
That night she took him to urgent care (the only one open on a Sunday night) after Jason and I copied and faxed what we needed to from Coronado. When he saw the doctor my mother said she was shocked at how red his throat was and they took a culture and it turned out he had strep....poor guy. The doctor prescribed him "the pink stuff" and sent them on their way.
MONDAY and TUESDAY
My Mom stayed and helped with Aiden. None of us have ever seen him in such pain. So much crying and screaming, not being able to eat ANYTHING and barely being able to drink. He would be so thirsty that he would finally give in and gulp down a bunch of Gatorade or Pediasure and then just cry because of the pain. He couldn't sleep very well because he would wake up in pain or would be hungry. He was on the Tylenol and Motrin throughout the entire day which gave him short windows of time that I think he felt OK. He would just lay on the couch and watch TV and stay very low key. Not much talking or playing, just laying. For anyone that has spent anytime with Aiden at his best...this is not normal.

TUESDAY NIGHT
He was on the pink stuff for 2 days and NO improvement. So last night I was fed up and decided to take him back to urgent care. Fortunately I was able to take him to the one he always goes to. Jason was swamped at work and my Mom had been doing this for 4 days straight so I told her to take some time off, so I went alone. It was a nightmare. Once we got in the room he just screamed and cried for 30 minutes...my little man was in so much pain and was so tired that he didn't know what he wanted and the worse part is he couldn't tell me. He would want up and then down...all the while, screaming and crying. At one point he just wanted to lie on the floor face down. It was so sad but made him stop crying for that moment so I let him be.
The nurse tried to bring in a glove balloon...he wasn't having it. At this point I was crying too. I consider myself getting tougher and tougher due to many urgent care trips but this was the worse. I can't put into words how awful it is to just hear your child in pain and not knowing anything that will make it better. I was so sad. The doctor finally came in and Aiden was off the floor and crying again at that point. The doctor and I had to yell over him to discuss the past couple days, while he screamed and I cried. I finally just wept "Please tell me there is something you can do for him." She said yes and listed off the many things she could and would do for him. I was so thankful. She decided to jump start different antibiotics by giving him a shot last, then another shot of steroids for the swelling, and a prescription for different antibiotics, steroids, and Tylenol with codeine for his pain. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Now that is being a doctor! {{P.S. Administering the shots, in his poor little butt :( was not fun and I was so upset having to pin down my son that is already in so much pain but I had to remind myself that it was for a really good reason.}}
TODAY
Aiden was still in pain but was more himself. My mom said that he would still cry some but overall was on the upside just from last night. My mom headed home and I gave him his first dose of steroids and he was actually able to eat cottage cheese. I have never been so happy to see him eat food. I almost wanted to cry! He had 4 servings! I took this picture and text it to both Jason and my mom and told them he was eating.
We were all stoked! That shows you how bad it was. Later, after meds, real food, more juice, and a nice bath I was actually able to get a happy little boy picture that hadn't been seen in a while...
Tonight I put my munchkin to bed with a belly of actual food, steroids, and Tylenol with codeine. I am thankful for GOOD pediatricians (and let's face it...meds!) that care about the well being of toddlers AND their parents and I am hopeful that he will get to sleep somewhat comfortably. This leads me to my side note that is a little rough around the edges but I don't care: I wish strep throat upon that first doctor (and she WAS a pediatrician too!) that saw him and was so shocked by his red throat but only gave him amoxicillin and that was it! You couldn't see that a poor little 1 and a half year old had a swollen painful throat and didn't want to do more for the days to come? I just don't understand. We saw Aiden turn around in one day just from what was done that night at my urgent care...there is NO reason why that could not have been done when he was seen originally. Germs happen, strep happens, I get that...but he could have been saved at least 1-2 days of excruciating pain had they done ALL they could and not just the bare minimum. This is a family blog so I'll keep it clean BUT there is a 5 letter word that comes to mind for her.
